In the village centre of Gavere, a beautiful residential development is planned in the Onderstraat. At a stone’s throw from the Market Square, a dozen flats will be a good addition to the qualitative village centre. The area is characterised by a great diversity of architectural styles and building scales. The De Viersprong project seeks to connect to the diversity of its surroundings in both scale and architectural expression.

The Onderstraat contains a large difference in height along its length and this is also clearly present at the site of De Viersprong. A natural parcelization of the building volume is created by embracing precisely that difference in height on the site and using it as an expression in both the façade and the cornice. In this way, the four buildings, each with three flats, are clearly legible and have a good connection to the streetscape in terms of scale.

The building consists of two cores, each serving six flats. Each flat has a spacious outdoor space on either the Onderstraat or the Sint Rochuswegel side. As a result, both the front and rear façades are lively. The flats on level +2 are very high-quality duplex flats with a beautiful double-height void that brings light and air deep into the living space.

In the façade, brick architecture has been chosen with a clear and pure façade layout. Although the four buildings will be built with the same brick, the way the brick is processed will result in four very different architectures. For example, one building will be traditionally mortared and another will be crenellated. The two other buildings will have expressive jointing and mortar treatment in the form of so-called ‘chipper’ technique. In this way, the buildings will clearly be related to each other, but they will continue to connect with the diversity of the streetscape of Gavere.
