Featured Project: Weyler Barracks in Bruges

The old Therisianen monastery (now Weylerkazerne) is rising like a phoenix in the center of Bruges.

The convent was built in 1668 for the Theresian community or the Discalced Carmelites. In 1783, the community was abandoned and the Sisters Apostolines moved into the convent in their place. In 1804, the convent was used as a military hospital and in 1835, the military hospital was converted into barracks.

The barracks are mainly reminiscent of the First World War. Captain Weyler was the commander of the second line during the famous battle at Halen, known as the Battle of the Silver Helmets. Captain Weyler was killed in action as a major in Zarren in 1918. The barracks were named after him in his honor.

The barracks were eventually closed and the buildings became a favorite spot for squatters and graffiti artists, with total decay looming around the corner.
That is now changing, as an unprecedented residential project is rising from the ruins of the barracks in the heart of Bruges' city center. Currently, the walls high up on the building are being restored with our Elegance Aura and Elegance Viola. It gives us enormous satisfaction to be able to contribute to this piece of heritage dating back to 1668.

The photo shows the proud men from the Himpe company in Oostkamp, who are using their exceptional craftsmanship to make our stones shine at this dizzying height. Congratulations Niels and company!
