Built on the ruins of a seventh-century monastery, Ingelmunster Castle is a monument with significant allure. Today, its grandeur is even greater than before: a section of the surrounding wall has been fully restored to its former glory. And even though the bricks appear centuries old, they are brand new.
A unique blend of red and orange bricks that perfectly capture the charm of the former surrounding wall. This was the choice of architect Alex Demeyere. “Sometimes it's possible to restore heritage with reclaimed bricks. But honestly, I prefer new bricks. You are assured of the quality, and it's easier to thoroughly renew sections.”
For the Ingelmunster restoration, Olivier Bricks developed a completely new brick. A unique mix of variegated bricks that were subsequently treated to create extra character. The result is a renewed surrounding wall that once again displays its true pride. Furthermore, the wall was rebuilt using traditional methods. Without a masonry line as a guide and with a direct joint. “But it is primarily the brick that determines the authentic appearance of the wall,” says the architect.
